HHS Urine Specimen Collector Training — Two-Day Certification Course

Build the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to perform federally regulated urine specimen collections with confidence and accuracy. This intensive two-day HHS Urine Specimen Collector Training combines regulatory instruction with practical, hands-on collection experience. Designed for new collectors, experienced collectors seeking refresher training, collection-site personnel, federal contractors, and drug-testing professionals, the course takes participants beyond simply completing paperwork it focuses on understanding the requirements and correctly applying them in real-world situations.

Day One – Regulations & Collection Procedures
Participants receive comprehensive instruction on HHS/SAMHSA federal workplace drug-testing requirements, collector responsibilities, collection-site security, donor identification and privacy, the Federal Custody and Control Form (CCF), specimen handling, chain of custody, temperature requirements, split specimens, direct observation, insufficient specimens, refusals, collector errors, and problem collections.

Day Two – Hands-On Training & Mock Collections
Participants move from the classroom to practical application. Students establish collection stations, complete Federal CCFs, conduct simulated collections, troubleshoot problem scenarios, and demonstrate their ability to properly respond when a collection does not go as planned.

To demonstrate proficiency, participants must successfully complete the five consecutive error-free mock collections required for HHS collector qualification: an uneventful collection, an insufficient specimen quantity scenario, a temperature-out-of-range scenario, a donor refusal to sign the Federal CCF, and a donor refusal to initial the specimen bottle tamper-evident seal.

Important: This course addresses urine specimen collections for Federal Agency Workplace Drug Testing Programs under HHS requirements. The HHS Urine Specimen Collection Handbook specifically states that it does not apply to DOT-regulated collections conducted under 49 CFR Part 40.
